What Training is Required?
Sea survival drills, RYA Ocean Yacht master certification must be obtained, First Aid, Mental and Physical Endurance i.e. Rowing Machine - 50K Daily, Coastal Rowing/Boat sea trials, Weight Circuits, Running, Physiotherapy, Yoga.
How do you go to the Toilet?
The number one question asked. Bucket and chuck it!
Where is the Sleeping Accommodation?
The stern cabin has been designed to be a sleeping area for Pete when he's not rowing and a refuge during bad weather.
What Happens In an Emergency?
The racing fleet will be followed by a number of safety vessels that will provide cover in emergency.
How is the Electrical Equipment Powered?
Electrical equipment is powered by a series of solar panels fixed to the cabin roofs and walls. This is the only source for producing energy onboard the boat so some electrical items are fitted with their own power supply.
Where are the Supplies Stored?
Pete must be completely self sufficient for the whole duration of the crossing. Therefore, all supplies including food must be carried on board the boat, stored in watertight containers below the main deck or in the fore and aft cabins.
How is Drinking Water Produced Onboard ?
All boats must carry a Water Desalinater, which turns salt water into drinking water. Any external assistance received during the race will result in disqualification.
What Food Rations are Required During the Race?
As the race can take up to three months to complete, most of the food taken will be freeze dried or boil in the bag. Treats such as chocolate, dried fruit and energy bars are essential and also help boast morale.
What Equipment is Carried Onboard?
Pete must take the minimum possible amount of designated equipment including safety items such as life jackets, life rafts, EPIRB (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon), VHF Radio and a medical kit.
What Navigation Systems are Used ?
Pete will be using a GPS to navigate across the Atlantic. He will also carry a sextant as a backup means of tracing his locations.
